If you’re a 1Password user, finding passwords tied to a specific location is about to get a whole lot easier.
In a blog post today, the company — which holds the top spot on our list of best password managers — announced a new feature for its password-keeping service – the ability to add a location to a saved password. When you’re at that location, that specific password will appear in the app’s home tab on a special “Nearby” card.

To save a location, edit the saved item and select “Add a location.” You’ll then move the map to where you want the action to trigger. It’s a little easier if you set this up while you’re at the location, but you can do it from anywhere. The Nearby tab is editable, and you can change the range to include passwords within 50 feet to ones within 10 miles.
You can also limit the number of items that show up in the app’s home tab by range. You can only be presented with passwords associated with locations within 50 feet or up to 10 miles away — although that could negate the feature’s usefulness if you’re once again presented with an overly long list of items.
Why does it matter where you access a password? If you have workplace door access codes saved, they’ll be easy to see when you need them instead of scrolling through a long list. You can set your medical account password to appear at your doctor’s office, see your hotel safe code when you’re near your room, access a neighborhood gate code when you pull up, or have your travel documents handy when you arrive at the airport.
If you save a lot of passwords, you know it can be tricky to find a certain one when you need it. Location-based passwords make sure the most relevant ones are easy to see.
